Article 25 - 37 000 wannabe drivers in line

Cobus Coetzee, Beeld

Johannesburg - Gautengers face a wait of up to six months for a learner's licence or driver's licence appointment at the 30 testing centres in the province.

Khusela Sangoni of the Gauteng Shared Service Centre (GSSC) said there was already a waiting list of more than 37 000 people waiting for test dates.

The GSSC's phone-in centre, operated by Sibize International Calling, was handling all calls for appointments for driver's and learner's licences.

Gauteng's provincial government signed a five-year contract with Sibize for the service in June last year.

The present backlog dated back to August last year, and had grown from 26 000 in May 2007 to the present 37 000.

No fewer than 13 994 applicants were waiting for learner's licences and 23 712 wanted a date for a driver's licence test.

Sangoni said the shortest wait was two to three months, but nearly half of the applicants, about 17 700 of the 37 000, could expect to wait up to six months for a date.

"There are many more people applying for a code 10 or code 14 heavy vehicle driver's licences these days, and that's why they're waiting so long," she said.

The GSSC phone-in centre was dealing with 45 000 calls a day for driver's and learner's licence appointments, but only 4 500 a day could be assisted.

Sangoni said: "The GSSC has appointed an independent company to find ways of improving the booking process.

The research has been done and a report submitted to the Gauteng government's top management..
